Single Tooth Replacement in Box Hill
A single missing tooth in a healthy mouth is the ideal situation for implant replacement. The tooth may be replaced for both function and appearance without harming any other teeth. The ideal replacement will look like a natural tooth both to the patient and others. It will also feel like a normal tooth and be easy to clean.
Single tooth replacement with an implant-supported crown is one of the commonest procedures in implant dentistry. Regardless of the size of the missing tooth, one implant is required for replacement of one tooth.
The first step is the placement of the titanium implant to replace the root of the lost tooth. This implant will remain unloaded at gum level for approximately three months.
During this time, the bone will heal and effectively form a bond with the implant. In order to provide temporary replacement of the missing tooth during this time, a number of solutions are possible.
Following implant placement, and waiting three months for integration of the implant in the bone, an impression (a mould) is taken of the top of the implant and a l crown is made in the dental laboratory. When ready, the crown is sent to our office and then it is tried and fitted into the top of the implant.
The crown could be attached to the implant either with a special screw or could be cemented in the same way as conventional crowns. The crowns are usually made from metal-supported ceramic (porcelain) or, in areas of high aesthetic demand, such as an upper front tooth, could be fully ceramic.
